Large area deck, Los Angeles, California
Addition of an entertainment area to take advantage of an
expansive backyard. The challenge of this exterior remodel was how to retain
the size while also creating some intimate spaces where smaller groups could
gather. The goal was to provide an open area where dozens of people could meet,
lounge and linger in a sunny California weekend while at the same time cocoon
smaller groups into spaces that felt inviting and intimate.
The resolution came through a wooden esplanade with 4 different “linger” areas
that seamlessly flow from one into the other, sometimes separated by a change
in floor level. The deck is delimited on one side by a retaining wall that
holds the encroaching hillside and vegetation at bay. Executed in cement, it
provides a contrast to the warm tones of the redwood.
The deck is lit by TDS’ own lighting fixtures, the Pole Canvas Light, an
adjustable outdoor light that rotates to provide either direct illumination
or soft filtered glow.
