Eagle Rock House, Los Angeles, California
“Facelift” of an existing
structure to add a contemporary look as well as address some functional
issues with the retaining wall, driveway and overhang. The challenge of
this particular project was working within the constraints of a hybrid building
devoid of salient characteristics to update the front entrance and make it
look sharp but also warm and welcoming.
This objective was obtained by the use of raw materials without masking:
exposed (unpainted) cement, exposed wood, glass. To add a soft, playful
element, part of the overhang was created as a sequence of empty squares over
which were stretched individual color pieces of canvas to create a “Mondrian”
effect. The canvas is easily replaced and so allows the entrance to have
a fresh presentation and color scheme as often as desired.
