Anthony House, Los Angeles, California - fire place and living room
re-design.
Re-inventing an existing space to encourage "liveability" and invoke
a friendly, modern atmosphere.
The focal point of this interior design project was the fireplace. Traditionally
situated in the center of a wall, this fireplace was built into a corner of the
room, close to a main sliding glass door. The location as well as the disposition
of the furniture in the room relegated the fireplace to a minor, obscure role and discouraged
the social gathering that is typically its point and function.
TDS' design concept was to provide relevance through a virtual encasing of the fireplace via a painted
backdrop as well as the re-creation of the mantle. This was done in smooth cement
to parallel elements found in the anterior patio and entrance, which are visible through
the glass door. To soften and contrast the material, birch shelving was added to the
wall and a birch wood bench on a pivot rotates to provide additional seating.
